APPROFONDIMENTI

In May 2024, the investment landscape in Italian start-ups saw a total of EUR 27.40 million invested through eight capital increases. This figure represents a significant decrease compared to May 2023, when investments amounted to EUR 166.93 million divided into sixteen transactions. The comparison shows a marked decrease in both the number of transactions and the total value of investments. It is interesting to note that equity crowdfunding campaigns contributed a total of EUR 1.8 million to the financing of start-ups in May, confirming this type of financing as a valid alternative to bank credit.

Performance in the First Five Months of 2024

Analysing the cumulative data for the first five months of 2024, the total raised by Italian startups was EUR 331.14 million. This figure also shows a decrease compared to the same period of the previous year, when EUR 407.36 million was raised. This decrease reflects a general downward trend in investments, which could be attributed to various macroeconomic and sectoral factors.

Major Sectors of Interest

During 2024, the sectors that attracted the most investment were mainly sustainable technologies and the green economy, followed by fintech, digital health and artificial intelligence. These sectors have seen increasing interest from investors due to their ability to offer innovative solutions and address emerging global market needs. In particular, the sustainable technology sector has benefited from increasing institutional and regulatory support aimed at promoting eco-friendly practices and reducing environmental impact.

Final considerations

Despite the drop in investments compared to the previous year, the start-up market in Italy continues to show signs of vitality and ability to attract capital, especially in strategic and innovative sectors. Investment dynamics could be influenced by several factors, including global economic conditions, government policies and technological developments. However, the ability of Italian start-ups to adapt and innovate remains a key element for their future success.
