Energy efficiency: what it is and why it is important to invest in it

UPDATE DI SETTORE

The objective of energy efficiency is the better allocation of energy through interventions on public and private buildings, business and commercial complexes, in order to optimise the relationship between energy input and output in terms of production or consumption.

Energy efficiency measures are doubly beneficial. On the one hand, they make it possible to use energy sources in an optimal way, without a reduction in performance but with less energy consumption. On the other hand, the expenses incurred for energy efficiency measures benefit from advantageous tax deductions.

Why is it important to invest in energy efficiency?

Investing in energy efficiency means making an investment that will pay off in both the short and long term. Generally speaking, it involves interventions that improve the performance of buildings. The higher the energy class of a building, the higher the resale value due to high living comfort (in terms of temperature stability, air quality and absence of draughts) and low energy consumption.

The positive effects on the environment are also very important. The more a building is able to make optimal use of energy, the less impact it will have in terms of environmental and air pollution. A system oriented towards the gradual abandonment of fossil fuels in favour of renewable energies manages to combine environmental protection with energy and economic savings.

What is the difference between energy saving and energy efficiency?

Energy saving and energy efficiency are two different concepts, although they often go hand in hand. Energy saving refers to those actions aimed at reducing consumption levels by cutting waste and optimising the use of energy supply and use sources. Typical examples are the adoption of virtuous behaviours such as using household appliances at certain times of the day and switching on systems less often. It is clear that these measures, which remove the factors that influence energy consumption and aim to use less energy, do not always lead to an improvement in energy efficiency. On the contrary, improving energy efficiency always leads to savings in energy bills.

The new frontier of energy efficiency

Improving the energy efficiency of companies or private facilities can sometimes require a large initial investment, especially if the necessary infrastructure has to be purchased. Fortunately, alternative solutions such as rental are becoming increasingly popular, ranging from LED lighting systems, cogeneration and trigeneration plants to heat pumps and industrial biomass boilers, automation and home automation systems, and rooftop photovoltaic systems for self-consumption.

These solutions are aimed both at entrepreneurs interested in investing in renewable energy and implementing energy efficiency solutions for their companies, and at suppliers, installers and designers who need support in choosing the most suitable energy and economic solutions for their end customer.
